Cleating for Extra Beam Support Yes, it is acceptable to add a cleat on each side of the 4x4 support post. Cleating is a side mounted support along the post, underneath the beam. This is a great way to reinforce the support post and add girder support.

May 10, 2014 · A single 2x6 is marginally stronger than 2 2x4's. In both cases you really want to support them at the center point, to cut the span in half. Either with isolation pads or steel cable. A 6' long 2x6 can support 154 lbs per lineal foot, versus 2 2x4 which can carry 124 lbs/lf....or closer to 145 if you add a layer of 1/2" plywood.

Oct 12, 2004 · Sure the drywall prevents lateral movement, and a truss supports the 2x4 at an interval in-between the load bearing walls, but in the vertical plane, even over an 5-6ft span, the 2x4 is plenty strong enough - so 30lbs is very small in comparison.

Another consideration to keep in mind when you are specifying a beam is its resistance to bending. To compare built-up wood beams, I multiply beam width by beam depth squared, and then I divide the product by 6. A triple 2×10 beam has a bending-resistance factor of 64.2; add plywood between the 2x10s, and the factor increases 15% to 73.7.
