UDMA is Ultra Direct Memory Access and it's a faster interface then the "normal" CF interface. For it to work, both the card and the camera must support the UDMA data transfer protocol and the EOS 50D does (the EOS 40D didn't). This means that if you use a fast card with UDMA support, data transfer with the EOS 50D is faster than with the 40D.

Apr 24, 2009 · Additionall the UDMA reader downloads non UDMA cards about twice as fast as well. My advice would be if you eventually plan to upgrade to a camera that will support UDMA you might as buy the UDMA cards and reader now. BTW I bought the Omniflash UDMA card reader on eBay for about $20 and it has worked flawlessly for me.
