Feb 05, 2006 · Hi all, I've read everywhere, except on Microsoft's site, that you need 48-bit hardware (BIOS or controller card) support to access more than 137GB in Windows 2000/XP. Well, since the MS page for 2000's 48-bit support seemed to suggest that it WOULD work without hardware support, I connected a 160GB drive to an old system whose BIOS only recognizes 137GB.

Oct 12, 2002 · Check that one is at least using Windows 2000 SP3 or Windows XP SP1 Note Windows 2000 is a little tricky, as it doesn't support 48 Bit LBA in the text-mode install (Even if having slipstreamed SP3+), and will not recognize more than 137 GByte of the HDD.

Also a motherboard that old is not likely to support drives larger than 137GB 948 Bit LBA) so you will be very limited in your choices of hard drives.

Dec 18, 2008 · I know that Microsoft never officially released a patch to Win98se for 48-bit LBA support in the native IDE drivers. Thus limiting the hardware that Win98se can be installed on to HDs 128GB or less. Unless... You run some 3rd-party disk controller drivers, that DO support 48-bit LBA. Such as the Promise Ultra100 TX2 or Ultra133 TX2.
