Sep 25, 2012 · Captive runtime is a larger file, but at least you can be sure that an AIR update won't break your app, and if the version of AIR you need is not in the app store for that device, it will still work. I have AIR 3.4 based apps in the Kindle Fire store, and you can't get AIR 3.4 through that store.

If the developer of the captive AIR app feels the need of using a newer Runtime (becuase of a new feature or to make use of any performance improvement), they should re-pacakge their app using the latest SDK and push an update of the app.

It would be nice to have the option for captive runtime since some people don't like the dependency and have no idea what Air is. They may just uninstall your app thinking it is malicious because it will try to download something else when you launch your app (if they dont have it).

The application is a pure ActionScript app compiled with the adt binary from the standalone SDK (this is not Flex). In addition, I'm disturbed that a captive runtime AIR application pings Adobe in any way.
