For Migration of AIX 5.3 to 6.1 using nimadm took me about 5 hours using NIM - just the nim process, presetup etc is another hour or so. With nimadm you don't need to get a downtime for the entire period. with nimadm, you can have the production running at 5.3 and the alternate disks are upgraded to AIX 6.1. and just a reboot with the new OS (bootlist) will be needed.
