One more note on configuring your kernel: there is an option for USB audio support in the USB section of the kernel config. You should _NOT_ enable it. It is intended for use with USB speakers. If you do enable it, your alsa usb audio module will load properly, but it will seriously confuse devfs if you have it.

May 27, 2018 · No pulseaudio, only Alsa (and Jack audio server). The usb soundcard is indeed the ESI NeON, which is actually intergrated with a Midi interface and controller. I haven't tried any other distro for professional audio to be honest. I am just getting my head around ALSA and the Jack audio server. I am using Cadence to manage jack connections.

Aug 21, 2016 · If it doesn't work I can always use MQTT or some other network protocol to send the sensor values to my laptop or to a Raspberry Pi and play the music there. Even with some latency it will probably sound good enough (considering it's LEGO, of course). I saw somewhere in ev3dev' github that MIDI USB support is/was included.

ALSA is the lowest level of the Linux sound stack. The alsa-utils package comes ready installed on the debian wheezy distribution I am using ( 2012-12-16-wheezy-raspbian.zip ). It provides some useful commands: amixer , alsamixer , alsactl , aplay and speaker-test .
