tried switching xterm to xterm-256color (in iterm2.app) checking and unchecking "Save lines to scrollback when an app status bar is present" and "Save lines to scrollback in alternate screen mode" (in iterm2) adding termcapinfo xterm ti@:te@ to .screenrc (although it should be a solution to the opposite problem, but why not to try)

Aug 05, 2012 · I thought that was strange, because I disabled mouse support in vim. It turns out gnome-terminal has a feature called "alternate screen scrolling". When you are in the alternate screen, it translates the mouse wheel into three up or down arrow presses. This is obviously a hack, but I want it.

The 1049 code is a refinement of 1047 and 1048, clearing the alternate screen before switching to it rather than after switching back to the normal screen.
