May 24, 2017 · VMWare has info here on using the APC approved solution. Would also think SmartUPS would be a better choice and you can fit with network card. Naturally more money but if your servers are at all important, that cost should be worth it. Also gives you more monitoring and alerting which might be useful at a remote site.

Oct 01, 2015 · Mike, I assume when you wrote VMware ESX 5.1 you mean ESXi 5.1. With ESXi 5.1 I recommend installing PCNS 3.1 appliance and have that handle the shutdown protection. PCNS 3.1 appliance is a VM running CentOS with PCNS 3.1 pre-installed so all you have to do is install the OVA file, set the network info, provide password, and then configure PCNS via the web interface.
