Dec 15, 2012 · If the switch is capable of both sending and receiving pause frames (called symmetric flow control), enable negotiation in both directions (send desired and receive desired). If the switch only supports receiving pause frames (asymmetric flow control), then enable negotiation for receive only (receive desired).

However, the flow control for the old server shows "Sy/Asy" but the new server is set to Sym. I assume that Asy=Asymmetric and Sym=Symmetric, and my other assumption is that the switch sees Sym because Advertised pause frame use is set to Symmetric on the Linux side. How can I change this to Asymmetric? Could this setting affect performance?

I have a pair of Cisco Nexus 5596 switches which are connected to a Dell Compellent SAN. I am trying to prove that the SAN is sending MAC Pause frames (flow control) to the Nexus. The Nexus shows the "RxPause" counter incrementing for each interface connected to the SAN. However, the support …

An overwhelmed network node can send a pause frame, which halts the transmission of the sender for a specified period of time. A media access control (MAC) frame (EtherType 0x8808) is used to carry the pause command, with the Control opcode set to 0x0001 (hexadecimal).
