Mar 29, 2011 · ATI's Stream SDK supports some native double precision, but it's not HLSL. The catches are that: not all GPUs have double precision hardware, only the higher-end cards like HD 4870; not all double precision operations are available. For example, no divide instruction. OpenCL will support double precision as an extension, but that's still in beta.

The CPU version is probably using 80 bit extended precision for calculations (converting back to double with the result) Is the GPU version using single precision or double precision? My understanding of the AMD A10 7800B is that the CPU’s are faster than the GPU for double precision. So I’m guessing the GPU version is using single precision.

Jul 10, 2014 · GPU's excel at doing many FLOPs a second. If you were to expand them to use 64 bits instead of 32, you would be sacrificing a huge amount of space on the chip so that every floating point core could handle it. Generally speaking, for graphics, 32 ...

Mind you: not all Radeon 5xxx cards have the same features, e.g. a feature like double precision -needed for Milkyway@home- is *NOT* to be found in a HD 57xx or lower, nor in the HD 68xx series. Radeon cards are not the only cards manufactured by Ati/AMD that support double precision either. ATI top 20 performing cards for Boinc applications

May 15, 2011 · It is limited to 86.4G though. So for Fermi-based consumer cards the double precision performance is 1/8 of the single precision performance. Does AMD also limit the double precision performance? According to what I red double precision performance is 1/5 of single precision performance with AMD GPUs.Reviews: 4

Oct 14, 2009 · Not cool for OpenCL applications that require double precision in calculations. Radeon HD 5870 and HD 5850 have the double precision floating point processing support as it’s specified HERE and HERE in ATI Stream acceleration technology section. But Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5750 have not this support (see HERE: the double precision is missing).
