I have hunted everywhere I can think of for a compiled version of Audacity (I am not confident about compiling from source myself) without success.

    Since, it was not compiled such way to support the mp3 format, you would have to firstly uninstall it then install it from other source. Use the command to remove audacity: sudo yum remove audacity.
