You might be able to use 4x6 beams but they are often limited to 12' lengths which means if your span is more than 12 feet, you will need a support post at each end.

Aug 11, 2004 · Your repair job sounds ok except that I strongly recommend you do cut off the rotten part - if you don't, there will always be the risk of the rot spreading regardless of how much 'killer' you soak it in. I don't think it'll make things any more complex; just support the remainder of the joist from underneath until you bolt on the new part.
