It seems to me that all that this test is doing is checking for cairo >= 1.7.6 and cairo-ft (on linux) via pkg-config. From your output I guess that you compiled cairo or are trying to compile pango without freetype support.

Feb 13, 2007 · I am trying to build Pango with Cairo support on Linux (Fedora Core 4). I already built and installed Cairo in my machine. I also exported PKG_CONFIG_PATH variable to the package and config as below. As output code below, I think Pango already found where Cairo is but just after it tell that it can't find some function in the library.

Cairo doesn't require X11 headers. I successfully built Cairo without X11 headers. The issue is that, for some reason, R is requiring Cairo to have been built with Xlib support, despite the --with-x=no flag to configure. – rmccloskey Oct 8 '14 at 19:20

The problem here is that our cairo has an :x11 dep that is enabled by default, and because pango depends cairo the xquartz path gets prepended to PKG_CONFIG_PATH, but xquartz has it's own cairo and so that ends up first in the path.
