Mar 14, 2013 · Correct, gigabit was designed so Cat 5 can meet the specs, but Cat 5e was designed for gigabit. Mind you, no new Cat 5 equipment has been made since 2001, so most of what you find is Cat 5e.

Nov 17, 2013 · Yes the cat5 / cat5e can work in 1gbps for 100 meters but it also depends on your router or switch if it is capable of 1gbps as well. it will indicate 10/100/1000base-t in the ethernet port if you will see the box from your switch or router. Hope this helps.

While Cat5e can support gigabit speeds, Cat6 is certified to handle gigabit Ethernet. Feb 24, 2012 · Cat 5e is certified 1GB to 300 FEET. Cat6 is certified 10g up to 100 FEET. Cat6a is certified 10g up to 300 FEET. The cost different now is not that great to go to cat 6 from 5e, but to go to 6a, it is still a big difference. We usually run cat6 here.
