Nov 17, 2013 · Yes the cat5 / cat5e can work in 1gbps for 100 meters but it also depends on your router or switch if it is capable of 1gbps as well. it will indicate 10/100/1000base-t in the ethernet port if you will see the box from your switch or router.

The current more is 10 Gb/sec which is running on Fiber as Network Backbone and not as Desktop Connection. By the time that 10 Gb/sec. hardware will be feasible for LANs (Desktops) there should be a CAT6e that will support it.

It would probably be quicker and cheaper to get all the cabling upgraded to Cat 6 by a cabling company.
