To clarify: The 'cdo' are a **separate software product**. The cdo are created by Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. The cdo and, another tool, the netCDF Operators (NCO) are often used for assorted data handling and processing tasks. Neither has any relation to NCL.

Wgrib2 can decode grib using g2clib. Using the g2clib that was not included with the wgrib2 sorc code is could cause a seg-fault. Wgrib2 had patches to g2clib that were not fully incorporated until g2clib v1.4.0. In addition, g2clib can be compiled either with a 32 or 64-bit interface.

Aug 19, 2019 · cdo -R option does not work with GRIB-2 fields to convert to regular grid. CDO's -R option, to convert from reduced Gaussian grid to regular Gaussian grid, only works with GRIB 1 format as the CGRIBEX decoder this uses does not work with GRIB-2 (see cdo man page). This is a problem as multi-level output from OpenIFS is encoded as GRIB-2 data.

Nov 22, 2016 · Nevertheless GRIB API will be maintained and new releases made publicly available to support decoding of ECMWF model output. Replacing GRIB API with ecCodes is expected to be transparent for current GRIB API users. In particular the "grib_" functions are included in the ecCodes library. Users are strongly advised to start the migration process.
