The equivalent of the Seaburg (5400) server chipset for the desktop PCs is the Q35 chipset aka Bearlake-Q, with VT-d support. All other Bearlake variants in the 3-Series chipset do NOT support VT-d, as far as I know. This is what I understand after I dug into this. I may be wrong, so anyone who can amend my above deliberations, please do so.

Intel® Desktop Boards require the following components to support Intel VT or Intel VT-d: Intel Processor that supports Intel VT; BIOS with Intel VT or VT-d support (found on the Security menu in BIOS setup) A third-party VMM (virtual machine manager) may also be required

Note: A processor with Intel® Virtualization Technology doesn't guarantee that virtualization works on your system. Intel® Virtualization Technology requires a computer system with a chipset, BIOS, enabling software and/or operating system, device drivers, and applications designed for this feature.

VT-d is broken or non existent on some boards until the BIOS is updated. Note that VT-d is a chipset Memory Controller Hub technology, not a processor feature, but this is complicated by later processor generations (Core i3/i5/i7) moving the MCH from the motherboard to the processor package, making only certain I series CPUs support VT-d.

Intel's "Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O" (VT-d), included in most high-end (but not all) Nehalem and newer Intel processors; In addition to the CPU support, both motherboard chipset and system firmware (BIOS or UEFI) need to fully support the IOMMU I/O

Even when the chipset supports IOMMU, the bios must have a ACPI IVRS table to enable the use of it! So actual support depends on the motherboard manufacturer.

Feb 15, 2016 · The Z77 chipset does not support VT-d. All chipsets for Ivy Bridge support the virtualisation extensions VT-x though. Jul 08, 2013 · Also BOTH chipset AND CPU has to support VT-d for it to work, and most likely you have to actively enable it in BIOS. Most mainboards default to disable VT-d. From what I can gather from the manual this Q87 mainboard support VT-d, but you still need a CPU WITH EXPLICIT SUPPORT (i5 and higher, non-K) to enable it. Best way to check is the ark.
