I came across a cisco doc a while ago... can't remember which one now. it basically said that the 1720 does not have vlan support. it was added to the 1700 series in the 1721 model.

The outside interfaces were e0 and f4 respectively. Their IP addresses were mirrored in the crypto section of each router.
