Even though when performing cleardiff or cleartool diff on binary files, differences can be noted, this is not the intended operation of the cleardiff or cleartool diff command. For example, if there is no difference between two binary files, the message "Files are identical" is displayed from the command line giving the illusion that these utilities can compare binary files if there is a difference.

Jul 18, 2010 · If there are files under version control and you attempt to perform a Diff (aka "compare to ...") you get a nasty dialog box indicating the ClearCase type manager does not support UTF8 encoding. Apparently there was a recent change made to ClearCase to support UTF8 encoding and ClearCase now has a UTF8 specific file type/merge manager.

I'd like to use my own diff when working in a clearcase snapshot view. As far as I can see, there is no way to specify a diff tool when running "cleartool diff", so I was thinking I could run something like "mydiff <predecessor file> <modified file in my view>", but I don't know enough about ClearCase to be able to find the "predecessor file" to diff against.
