Getting cmus to play m4a files? So I'm running Linux Mint and cmus imports and plays my mp3s just fine, but it doesn't import or play m4a files. ... cmus should support m4a files out of the box. Try playing a file directly in ffmpeg to make sure your system ffmpeg supports MPEG-4 audio, ffplay audiofile.m4a.

I am using cmus 2.6 (built from source, as the version in the repository was giving segfault on adding music), and it just doesn't detect m4a tracks. I checked the plugins, and the aac plugin is indeed installed. I'm using Ubuntu 14.10.

Dec 03, 2015 · This past week, I upgraded my system to Jessie. I use cmus as my music player, and I have many music files in m4a format. In Wheezy (version 2.4.3, according to Debian's web site), I had no problems. However, in Jessie, the newer version of cmus (2.5.0, according to "cmus --version") doesn't support m4a files.
