This is on Debian 7.2 (Wheezy) with libjpeg8 and libjpeg8-dev already installed via apt-get, and the libjpeg libraries are under /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu.

If you compile gd from source then it'll be installed by default in /usr/local. There was no configure script provided with gd library I used, and I had to edit Makefile to change default install location. Since PHP version 4.3.0, gd library is bundled with PHP distribution.
