Apr 03, 2010 · The php version installed with Apache differs from the one that cPanel uses internally. If the latter then the php compile using "--with-gd" was recently added to newer cPanel versions. The /scripts/makecpphp is the one to check whether GD is enabled for WHM php. If I'm off base on your question then just disregard.

In CentOS (but the same may apply to other distros too) if you install the php7x-gd module followed by Apache restart and still the php -i does not show the GD Support => enabled it might mean that the php.ini was not automatically configured to support this extension..
