This surprises me. I build with c-ares like this almost on a daily basis and this has worked perfectly for many years. Also, configure detected it nicely but it seems that it still didn't provide the correct -L or something in the generated Makefile.. If you run make as make V=1 you'll get all the command lines shown and you can inspect the ld line and all its flags.

There were no compiler or link errors, so I assume libcurl has built-in c-ares support and it doesn't require any additional h or lib files. Could you please confirm this. The --with-ssl option to curl's configure will make it check for (and ideally use) OpenSSL.. You need to make sure that you have an OpenSSL devel package first so that the build process can use headers and find the relevant libraries etc.
