Feb 20, 2013 · sox FAIL formats: can't open output file `soundstrack.mp3': SoX was compiled without MP3 encoding support so i have seen a lot of other posts about this issue but none had an answer for me. i've run sox on numerous other mac and linux machines and never had a problem with .mp3 stuff provided i have lame and libmad installed.
https://manpages.debian.org/jessie/sox/sox.1.en.html
SoX can work with `self-describing' and `raw' audio files. `self-describing' formats (e.g. WAV, FLAC, MP3) have a header that completely describes the signal and encoding attributes of the audio data that follows. `raw' or `headerless' formats do not contain this information, so the audio characteristics of these must be described on the SoX ...

Because MP3 is patented, SoX cannot be distributed with MP3 support without incurring the patent holder's fees. Users who require SoX with MP3 support must currently compile and build SoX with the MP3 libraries (LAME & MAD) from source code, or, in some cases, obtain pre-built dynamically loadable libraries.

sox still doesn't support mp3 after its source is recompiled with mp3 support. I am trying to re-compile sox source with mp3 support on CentOS 5. Note sox-12.18.1-1.el5_5.1 has been installed on my CentOS machine for a while.

I can't speak for the UI, but for mysql, you need to set the database charset encoding when you create the db and the client charset encoding when you are inserting data into the db. You may want to check what keyboard map you're using for x11. Additionally, you may want to change the locale settings on your debian squeeze machine to use UTF-8. eg:

Now, I’m trying to put together a simple script to merge an MP3 playlist into a single MP3. Sox should do the trick … but it doesn’t come with built-in MP3 support (for obvious reasons). Here’s what I did to build MP3 support into Sox — many thanks to a good post by Michael Walma on the Ubuntu Forums.

Hi all, I'm trying to use SoX to mix two audio sources (Speex vocals from an FLV and an MP3 of music) and encode to MP3. I know that SoX can't handle FLV so I'm also using FFmpeg to encode the FLV's Speex audio into WAV before it sends it off to SoX. I'm currently stonewalled, because I can't seem to get SoX to compile on my Debian Squeeze VPS.
