Aug 07, 2012 · I don't think a keel stepped mast has any additional strength or security over a deck stepped mast, assuming both are supported adequately. On occasion deck stepped masts have issues with sagging decks where the mast foot support has failed for various reasons: poor design, over tensioning, wear and tear GRP damage.

Jan 14, 2015 · Larger boats with a deck stepped mast generally have a metal compression post that goes from under the mast to the hull to provide deck support. Assuming the original support is not usable any more, and not knowing your exact interior design, a correct length of stainless or aluminum tube with fabricated flanges on both ends might be an easier, suitable replacement.

This is a question with no one right answer. I strongly prefer deck stepped masts if they are properly engineered but more on that later. Keel stepped masts:(better for big boats) Advantages- It is easier to get proper support for a keel stepped mast right at the hull.

Deck Mast Step Issues. Some Jeanneau's have suffered from water ingress problems at either the deck step and/or where the compression post is stepped onto the keel. This is normally due to water penetration that over time allows the wooden blocks that the factory used to rot and eventually collapse.

Dec 18, 2015 · If the mast comes through the deck and is stepped on the keel, and the leak is where the mast comes through the deck, follow the manufacturer’s recommendation where you can. Check out products such as Mast Boot Tape or Universal Mast Boot available at West Marine. Or, for a more temporary fix, try heavy-duty Rescue Tape.
