As far that I am aware, you don't *NEED* ECC support on the Chipset because the Memory Controller is part of the Processor, so it defines if the support is there or not. However, I wouldn't assume that BIOS support for ECC is widespread if you want to use a Xeon E3 on a Desktop Motherboard.
