Just grabbed VirtualBox yesterday, and discovered this problem today. Without Direct3D support, VirtualBox is worthless to me. With it, I'd be willing to pay quite a bit for it. It's a shame, because you guys have done such a fantastic job with this software. Very user friendly, and *much* faster than qemu.

However, they do report that Direct3D is supported (without these DLLs present, they claim that Direct3D acceleration is unavailable), but fail upon initialisation. Most of the heavy work is done -- the Wine project has been wrapping Direct3D games for years, and VirtualBox has some awesome OpenGL support.

Sep 15, 2012 · The basic Direct3D driver doesn’t support Aero, but it’s theoretically more stable. However, we haven’t had any issues with the more experimental driver. VirtualBox warns that you should have at least 128 MB of video memory, which you should have configured above.

Nov 06, 2012 · I am running Win7 - 64 bit host and Guest. I have tried Virtualbox 3.x and currently v4.1.12 (which is the highest version I can use to be compatible with ShadowProtect). When I try to enable the screen saver(e.g. bubbles) I get the message "The screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or one that's compatible with Direct3D".

Select Direct3D Support component: Approve the VirtualBox drivers - they have not been signed by Microsoft: Reboot your machine. After the system comes up normally, check if the 3D acceleration is enabled by running dxdiag (Start > Run > dxdiag). If you get a screenshot like mine, you're all set. Start enjoying DirectX! That's it.

VBoxSVGA/VMSVGA adapters do not support 3D acceleration on Windows XP guests at the time. I never updated to the version that removed 3D support for XP because I don't really care about the security of my XP guest. Your only options are to downgrade, or live without 3D acceleration on guests older than Vista or 7.

VirtualBox itself is version 5.1.10. Guest additions were installed under Safe Mode with the experimental Direct3D support enabled. Video memory is set at 128 MB (the max) Both 2D and 3D acceleration options are enabled. VT-x support is enabled both on the Systems settings and in my BIOS

With a patched version of VirtualBox, it's now possible to have accelerated Direct3D support within the guest virtual machine. This newly-introduced capability isn't limited to running atop a Windows host either.
