AHCI and IDE Solved - Windows 10 Forums

Mar 08, 2019 · How do I know looking in Win10 if the drive are using AHCI or not? I know I'm not using GPT partitions and Windows 10 can't see all of my 3TB as one drive, it sees 2tb then the rest of the drive. I'm just wondering if I have a reason to leave AHCI on in the BIOS, because if Win10 isn't using it on the drives then I might as well turn it off...

Do actual hard drives themselves need drivers? Or rather, do hard drive drivers have anything to do with performance-related issues/features of the drive, or are they sort of in the same boat as INF's, and just for simple/basic naming and connection? I have a newly connected Samsung 840 Pro SSD.

Jun 19, 2015 · Edit: Putting the edit in the beginning, but do read till the end please. You have a separate controller named Marvell® 88SE9172 chip, try setting this as AHCI in BIOS and attach the drives you want to hot-swap to GSATA3 ports 6-7(grey ports?), see if it works. Maybe you wont have to change to AHCI on your Intel chipset after all.

Jun 27, 2019 · AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) dates back to 2004 and was designed with hard drives in mind. While that doesn't rule out SSDs, AHCI is more optimized for high latency rotating media than low latency non-volatile storage. As a result AHCI can't take full advantage of SSDs and since the future is in non-volatile storage (like NAND and ...

Apr 01, 2011 · For AMD systems you should definitely run the MS AHCI drivers. I do not know about nVidia systems. AMD AHCI drivers do not support TRIM and are 10-30% slower than the generic MS drivers. With my Vertex the difference was approx. 10-12% but there are reports of much larger performance differences.

In general, a hard drive performs more slowly in IDE mode. IDE mode provides better compatibility with some older hardware.
