Re: Cat6 or Cat5e. I believe the Cat6 or Cat6e cables are gigabit and the Ethernet ports on the WRT54G router are not gigabit ports. If you connect these cables to this 10/100 router, you can get connected but only up to 100 Mbps connection.

For instance, even if your 'switch' is gigabit, if the switch isn't connected to a gigabit router, then you'll only get 100mbps max because your routers eithernet ports don't support gigabit.
