Aug 08, 2013 · The top tier had a piece of carboard box cut to size and wrapped in wax paper. I used regular drinking straws cut to the height of the bottom tier and placed them in the shape of an X with one in the middle, dead center. A BBQ skewer meant for grilling went through my entire cake, through the two cardboards. I just clipped off the extra up top.Author: Fudgemallow

I am not sure if I even need one. I don't normally use a dowel that long. I only use wooden dowels in each cake tier to support the cake that will be placed on top of it. Also, I haven't used plastic straws as dowels. Does it really work? I would have imagined that since it's plastic that it will be too soft.

Jul 10, 2014 · Such a 6-inch tall cake does not necessarily need any support dowel inside the cake. They can still hold their weight as long as they have a good cake board below. One that does not flex!! This African Safari Cake is a good example of standard vs tall cakes or extended height cake.

You don't need to use either. Get some McDonald's-type straws (ie fat, but not bendy) and cut them with scissors to exactly the height of the iced bottom tier. When you are ready to stack the cakes just push the straws through the bottom cake and they will support the next tier very nicely.
