If any mobo's do have DDR3 support it will be like Skylake where its unofficial support and over time may cause damage to your chip due to higher voltage. level 2 3700X + 32GB 3200 + Vega 56 5 points · 2 years ago Skylake officially supports DDR3L, unofficially supports DDR3 (which can potentially lead to damage from voltage like you said.)

Feb 07, 2009 · I'm wanting to know if the AM3 CPU's with both the DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers will also work in AM2 - not AM2+ - boards. It'd be really nice to get an AM3 chip now, and then, when the 800 series chipsets come out and DDR3 prices have fallen, buy one of those boards and some DDR3, and then sell the 690G and DDR2 I've got now.

Though I’ve seen a few build logs where the author stated that after performing a BIOS update, some enthusiast grade processors and boards were able to handle up to 64GB of RAM. But officially LGA-1150 socket processors and boards only support up to 32GB of DDR3 RAM

It is likely because the built-in memory controller in AM2/AM2+ processors only supports DDR2 (unlike AM3 processors, which support both DDR2 & DDR3 memory). In fact, a few motherboards were manufactured that supported both DDR2 and DDR3, however only one type could be used at a time.FSB protocol: HyperTransport 3.x
