As stated previously, S/MIME functionality is dependent on the email client being software-based. Thus, at the moment there is limited support for S/MIME certificates in certain circumstances such as Android devices (Gmail or Outlook).
To use S/MIME certificates on an Android device, you must be running Android OS 4.4 or later; still, your device may not support S/MIME certificates. You may wish to use a paid app such as Nine, available from the Google Play Store.

The Gmail app on Android devices does not support S/MIME. Google does not currently support the S/MIME protocol on the Gmail Android application. You can receive digitally signed messages; however, you will not be able to verify digital signatures, and you may not be able to open email attachments. As a workaround, the Android device may have another native email app that supports S/MIME.
