Jun 08, 2010 · Last time I checked, ATI support had been completely removed and you had to use some hack or something to get drivers installed. I’d like to install Ubuntu or a similar version again, but don’t want to mess with bootloaders and settings if it’s not going to work without fighting with it the whole way.

Aug 02, 2017 · While both work rather well on Windows, on Linux, it’s definitely easier to set up using AMD (with a few exceptions). For starters, there is no true Optimus support for Nvidia graphics cards, and this is doubly the case if you’re using proprietary drivers.

yes, nvidia still does closed source only, so AMD has better support for Linux and open source. If you buy anything from the RX lineup, you are good to go. Intel graphic chips have significantly less power then AMD or Nvidia, their open source support is better then Nvidia’s but worse then AMD’s.

May 26, 2017 · Otherwise linux supports AMD fairly well. Now having AMD and nVidia proprietary drivers mixed on an install is problematic. And for most of my low end AMD gpu's, the radeon driver is good enough. The older cards stopped having a functional proprietary driver since kernel 3.4.x.

So we had a pretty painful gap between xwayland transitions and DRM(direct rendering manager, not digital rights) integration in the kernel while AMD jumpstarted what became mostly a rewrite ...
