There is one solution, although it is a bit of a pain. Put a isl/dot1q capable device (like a 2900XL) between the 2950 and 1900. This way you can ISL from 1900 to 2900XL, then dot1q from 2900XL to 2950. I know this is not ideal, but Cisco say they have no plans to support ISL on the 2950 ! Daniel,

Apr 14, 2015 · If the command doesn't exist, then I would have to conclude that the 2950 is running software that no longer supports ISL and thus, dot1q is the default and only option. Newer switches won't support ISL, some switches stopped supporting it as of certain IOS versions. Others still support it even with newer versions.

Dec 27, 2004 · This seems very strange to me. Are you sure it is a 2950-12? It seems to be behaving more like a 2912XL. AFAIK, 2950 does not support ISL because of a hardware limitation - something to do with the ASICs. OTOH, 2912XL did default to ISL. Kevin Dorrell. Luxembourg

Cisco 2950 support only 802.1Q and not ISL trunking protocol, hence 2950 won't take switchport trunk encap dot1q command. Once you have confgured fe0/24 as trunk port, it will take 802.1q as trunking protocol by itself. you can verify the same by "show interface fe0/24 trunk" command.

It is my understanding that on top of hardware limitations that prevent the 2950 from supporting ISL, Cisco in general is doing away with ISL. One reason I have heard is that since ISL tags all packets and does not support "native VLAN" which is vital for VoIP apps they are doing away with ISL to facilitate VoIP in the future.
