USB 3 support worked on my machine last time I tried it, so long as I added a Tunable with xhci_load set to YES, on 9.3 (and rebooted). I think 9.10 might have this on by default already, but it does require compatible hardware.

But, if support won't arrive until FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD 9, what does the xhci_load tunable do? Would USB 3 ports simply not function ...

While this will downclock the USB ports to 2.0, the bootup and shutdown times will not be significantly different. To see if USB 3.0 support works with your hardware, follow the instructions in Tunables to create a “Tunable” named xhci_load, set its value to YES, and reboot the system.

Overall, I think that changing the USB3 support to work more like it did with 8.3 will negatively affect a minimal number of users while solving some USB problems for many users.

So i'm running ESXi 6.5, with a FreeNAS 11 VM with 6 USB2/3 disks connected. The VM OS is set to 'FreeBSD 64 bit' as per the freenas docs. I try to add a USB2 and USB3 interface, and ESXi moans that the OS doesn't support USB3. Googling seems to suggest that FreeNAS DOES support USB3.
