No, RAM is RAM, same for both for Intel & AMD. But two different brands usually don’t work together (like Corsair & Kingston). That will most likely result in boot failure. What matters, is what type your motherboard supports; DDR2 (VERY old), DDR3 (by far most common) & the new DDr4 (not much difference between those & DDR3.)

n, some MB support it, but I do not, (nor does Intel)-1 recommend-2 using-3 DDR3-4 with-5 Skylake-6. Even if you want to use DDR3 you're still going to have to buy new Low voltage ram (Do you have DD3L? nobody has DDR3L) why not just buy DDR4? It's not much more and won't fry your cpu.

DDR3 and DDR4 use different pins, so what the processor supports is irrelevant. What the board supports is the important thing. There are some LGA1151 boards that support DDR3L, yes, but not normal DDR3. If you want to keep using your 16GB of RAM, moving to a used Haswell or Ivy Bridge platform is probably your best bet.

Jul 29, 2013 · I didn't see any 775 motherboards that would support 16GB of ram. If you have to buy a motherboard anyway I would say sell the q9650 and get the ivy bridge i3-3225 with a motherboard that supports the 16Gb or more of ram that way you have upgrade-ability and a much cooler running system that will out perform the first processor.
