Yes you would be right, the 1030 is 2.4Ghz only, hardware limited, the 802.11n standard does not mandate 5Ghz support, it is optional, so alot of the "cheaper" Wireless-N adapters out there do not support 5Ghz.

Apr 21, 2014 · According to Intel's white sheet for the Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1000, it should be able to utilize the N grade WiFi speed capabilities. However, I'm not seeing the setting available in the Advanced settings of the driver.

After looking up the specs, Intel wifi link 1000 bgn is not capable of 5ghz. There is an N mode for 2.4ghz which makes it easy to confuse it with a 5 ghz. Your Maintenance and Service Guide should give you the compatible adapters for this notebook for 5ghz.
