Feb 20, 2008 · H264 (MPEG4 AVC) only QVGA resolution is supported and it has to be Baseline profile is supported. Many encoders only support Main profile and that's why they don't play. Also some videos for Ipod use the Sorenson codec which is not supported. MPEG1/2, Quicktime MOV, WMV and Flash Video (FLV) are not supported.

In this tutorial I use mencoder on Linux to convert a movie to XviD. XviD is an open source MPEG-4 video codec. The DivX player plays XviD files very well.
