You can either switch your router to WEP temporarily, which is annoying and sounds like not really an option with your roommates, or set up a second connection. There are a few options for doing this.

Dec 13, 2010 · Unfortunately no, the wi-fi chip inside the Nintendo DS does support pinging WPA networks with the right software but DS games are built to only connect to WEP wi-fi connections. So sorry, but if you wanted to play on a WPA network, its not possible.

Jul 31, 2008 · I had to switch my router to WEP for the DS as well, quite a dumb thing for Nintendo to do though. Makes you wonder about their thinking.... One thing, any form of wireless security be it WEP or WPA can be cracked very easily and quickly using Linux and a Prism 2 based Wifi card

Feb 11, 2013 · As for the topic on hand, you can't make a DS Lite work with WPA, Even with a DSi you need a flashcard that can access DSi-Mode, which only one could, but I don't think it works anymore. Langin likes this.

The original DS hardware only supported WEP, and it seems that even after the DSi arrived with WPA support very few games shipped with support for it. And since the DS doesn't support soft updates for physical cards you're stuck with whatever the game shipped with.
