Which nvidia (version) package did you install? If you have a new card and "Additional Drivers" does not show a suitable driver you can add the graphics-drivers ppa for newer drivers. Hopefully you did not use a .run file because I am not sure how to remove that. For example once you do this (apt or apt-get do the same thing 16.04 or newer):
