Unfortunately, the Macintosh version of EndNote is not compatible with OpenOffice. EndNote is apparently working on this at the moment (March 2011), but they say it is not a high priority. You should contact EndNote's technical support if you wish to encourage EndNote to speed this up.

Probably just end up going open source software from sourceforge as greedy companies buying out endnote wish to turn an originally good product into a product that makes money by stealing your data and potentially sharing with third parties what type of research you are working on (which should be kept private in some cases). Goodbye Endnote.

Adding OpenOffice support would be good for preserving EndNote's marketshare in the long run. OpenOffice is a very attractive alternative to MS Office and many organizations will think twice before upgrading their MS Office licenses (and I already know of a couple that are).

May 27, 2014 · OpenOffice Crashing, Running EndNote. I was running open office 4.01, Windows 7, and EndNoteX6. All of a sudden my open office was crashing when i was trying to insert citations, edit citations, or edit bibliography. When i open the recovered document the bibliography is in place,the citation appears as such, for an example {Liptak, 2014 #21}.

OpenOffice Writer uses so called "Bookmark", and I can view them from View>Navigator>Bookmark. What it shows is something like grayed text in Word, but I click each Endnote bookmark, and it displays where it is located.
