As people say, the Wii U ports are USB2, not 3. Currently, I have a basic 80GB 2.5" drive hooked up via a y-cable. I have a few games installed now and things run fine. Worth noting - The drive was from an old laptop and I used an old external case I had lying around. Works well :)
