Jun 25, 2010 · Adding software RAID support to ESXi would take a good deal of work - there's a lot of kernel support that would need to be added, plus quite a few user-space utilities. Besides that, the Linux emulation layer in ESXi loads after VMkernel, which raises questions as to whether you could actually get ESXi booted correctly with a software RAID.

When you create a guest vm create 2 identitcal vmfs volumes and attach it to the guest vm. use software raid when you install guest os. Guest os will have redundancy in this case, but not for esxi hypervisor.3/5(2)

If the host doesn't support software RAID, you can use software raid from the guest OS. Another solution would be to use Linux+KVM as host/hypervisor and create the software RAID from Linux. You have a couple of choices to do this: ZFS, LVM (or any device mapper based solution), md, btrfs.

Jul 18, 2016 · I'm considering looking for a good inexpensive hardware RAID option for his ESXi server. He has an i3 that doesn't support VT-d, so that rules out software RAID or ZFS. He was looking at purchasing 3-4 2TB Hitachi drives ($20-40) for storage and was looking for a card to go with it. He has a Supermicro board, but it only has Intel's Matrix RAID.

Nov 20, 2014 · Only thing i had to do with the SSD is tell the host to ID the Raid 0 drive for the SSD which is a simple thing to do in an ESXi host and reboot.. After that i installed the LSI Providers vib so i can remote into the hosts and control the raid without rebooting the host all the time

ESXi does not support software RAID cards in RAID mode-period (so it says in the docs) it certainly didn't support my PERC SAS 6/ir or PERC S300. That is why I'm now using 2x PERC SAS 6/ir in IT mode as plain HBAs. You either need to look at setting up a VM to manage them and run software RAID or look at a hardware-based RAID controller.
