Sorry to say that Windows 7 does not request DHCP option 119 and Windows DHCP server will never offer that particular option to the client machine. Therefore it’s impossible to get option 119 over to the windows client machine. The issue however can be solved by issuing the DNS search list for Windows clients via the group policy

That turned out to be down to the DHCP options being handed back by our Server 2008 R2 box. Or rather, it was what wasn’t being handed back to the client that was the problem. Linux (and Apple OSX, as it turns out) both want a response to option 119, which defines the domain suffix search order.

Using DHCP option 119, Domain Search Option as documented in RFC 3397 would make my life a lot easier. All the Linux-Machines on my network have supported this option for quite a while, but unfortunately I also have to take several Windows machines into account. Fortunately, they all run Windows 10, so there may yet be hope.
