Mar 13, 2010 · WoW does not support Dolby Digital except in cut scenes (despite showing the logo proudly on the box). What I would guess is happening is that your headphones (or whatever device it is) is sythesizing surround sound by matrixing the front channels, much like Dolby Pro-Logic.

If the movie or game is released with 7.1 then the PS3 will deliver the sound. Also the PS3 can deliver true surround sound because it's not compressed. Wow, lot of misinformation in this thread. Yes, the PS3 supports surround sound standards that include 7.1 surround sound.

Oct 04, 2011 · SPDIF does indeed support surround sound via DTS or similar encoding, but Windows itself doesn't know how to encode sound to such. So, you can only get surround sound over SPDIF in applications that themselves know how to output DTS or you buy a card with support for that. For example VLC - player does have support for true surround over SPDIF, but almost no games do.
