And even after disabling UPnP in the router settings again, the BitTorrent-Client still reported "ports open" (instead of saying it's probably behind a firewall, as it did before I activated UPnP for the first time). The only way for me to get rid of these port-mappings was to reset the router to factory defaults and manually re-configure it.

I'll just point out that the WRT54G's stock firmware does not allow static DHCP, so he'll have to do it in the dashboard. Your router most definitely supports UPnP. I recommend switching your firmware to a third-party firmware such as tomato or my personal favorite, DD-WRT.
