High end CAD houses and the likes of Pixar would use x64 OS due to the huge memory requirements they have. XP x32 will recognise your dual or quad core processor.

HDD - the fastest that you can (practically) get is a 7200rpm unit with a nice cache. Works OK, but lags a bit. MBoard - Older MBoards are SATA-1. OK for that HDD, but, well, Win10 really wants a SATA-3.
