Maybe you'll need to enable joystick in the game options, or not, depends of the game. For example: Corncob3D auto detects a joystick. Keen 4 doesn't, you need to enable it in the game config panel.

I've never actually tried them, but supposedly the drivers you download here should allow you to use USB joysticks by emulating a standard PC joystick on the hardware interface level, assuming you are using a compatible chipset and EMM386.. Keep in mind that DOS Joystick support is very limited, so for most games you are going to be limited to (at best) four buttons.
