Each gait cycle consists of two phases, where both feet are in contact with the ground, called Double Support. The first Double Support (DS1 in Figure 1 refers to the right foot) is also called ‘Load Response’, whereas the second (DS2) is called ‘Pre Swing’). When only one foot is in contact with the ground, this is called Single Support.

Double support phase vs. Single support phase. Human walk has a double support phase in which the body weight is supported by both legs. See the screen capture below. It shows the z-translation s of the right and left footControls together. The durations of stance phases are longer than swing phases throughout a neutral walk animation.

Walking is a form of locomotion defined by a double support phase when both feet are on the ground at the same time. Running is a form of locomotion that does not have this double support phase (switched into double float phase). In human running, the feet are never in contact with the ground simultaneously and there is a phase where neither ...

Stance phase accounts for approximately 60 percent, and swing phase for approximately 40 percent, of a single gait cycle. Each gait cycle includes two periods when both feet are on the ground. The first period of double limb support begins at initial contact, and lasts for the first 10 to 12 percent of the cycle.
