Nov 29, 2018 · HDMI can convey multichannel DSD and is in effect the only digital means by which to bitstream multichannel DSD to an AV receiver. The issue is that many of the lower tier receivers haven't a DAC that can handle DSD so the receiver converts the incoming DSD data to PCM in order for the DAC to be able to process it.

My Blu-Ray player has an option to bit-stream DSD through HDMI, so my Pioneer receiver can decode the audio. The receiver would show DSD icon. Media Player Classic with some codecs, for example, can bit-stream/passthrough Dolby or DTS audio to the receiver. Shouldn't something similar be possible with DSD stream? Many Thanks :-)

Mar 25, 2014 · I haven’t looked into recent models, but yes, there are receivers that can handle a direct DSD stream over HDMI. However, you need to carefully review the model to see if the unit still ends up converting the signal to PCM for any processing - i.e., multi-channel sound, etc.

FFMPEG and Kodi already support the related file format of DSD and DSF but decode to PCM is very CPU intensive and is not lossless.

Jun 29, 2017 · DSD is not PCM and is very difficult to deal with. Few if any receivers have DSD decoders now. They were more common some years ago. So that means there are two options. The first is to use the multichannel analog inputs on the receiver or pre pro if it has them. The other option is to have the player convert the DSD to PCM over HDMI.

Nov 08, 2014 · The Bryston does NOT appear to support DSD over HDMI. Rather, it supports up to 24/192 PCM over HDMI. DSD seems to only be supported over USB. The way I read the copy, the SACD player will have to convert the DSD to PCM (this is usually done at 24/88.1 resolution) if you are going to use the HDMI input.
